New social network launched by Plymouth student

We Connect Students aims to enable prospective students to connect with others on their course or living in the same hall of residence, once they have accepted an offer to go to university. It puts the original plan for Facebook into action, as founder Mark Zuckerberg initially just wanted to develop a way for students at Harvard to connect with each other.

Economic impact study reveals University contribution to the regional economy approaching £250m

This figure is calculated across a range of factors including: procurement of goods and services; off-campus expenditure of staff and students; visitor spend; number of students in the regional workforce and business and community interactions.

The figures have been released as the University holds its graduation week, which in itself attracts 16,000 visitors to the city, spending over £530,000 in just 10 days.

University to rerun graduate employment session due to demand

The University of Plymouth hosted the ‘Graduates into Work’ session last month and was so inundated with requests that it is laying on a follow-up on Wednesday 19 May.

‘Graduates into Work’ is designed to help those out-of-work to assess their career options and their development needs, view and apply for current graduate job vacancies, access career advice, find out about business start-up support and learn about postgraduate study and the alumni programme.

Plymouth University and Cornwall Business Nominated for National Partnership Award

The partnership between Bude-based Zoeftig Ltd and the University is in the running for a trophy and cheque for £10,000 after being submitted for the UK Best Knowledge Transfer Partnership Awards.

The two organisations will travel to London on Wednesday 10 March, for a presentation and interview, before the overall winner is announced at a gala awards ceremony later that evening.

Formation Zone has attracted a wide range of businesses, from videogame and website designers to marketing and PR experts. It has proven remarkably recession proof, and has even helped some entrepreneurs to get back on their feet after the setback of redundancy.

Housed in the university’s Roland Levinsky Building, the 21-desk facility provides space, IT facilities, support and guidance from experts and networking opportunities, and has already seen a number of clients flourish and move on to establish their own offices.

They saw off strong competition from Plymouth City Council, Devon County Council and PricewaterhouseCoopers to secure the headline award at the gala event staged on the city’s historic Hoe.

University of Plymouth partners up with market-leading cash protection company

Saltash-based Spinnaker International is working with academics from the university’s Faculty of Arts on its latest generation of products and services thanks to a Shorter Knowledge Transfer Partnership (sKTP).The 40-week project is the first of its kind in the region following the introduction of the new sKTPs in July, which are designed to be flexible and act as a stepping stone for those businesses that may not have worked with higher and further education institutions before.

Enterprising Students Rewarded

Projects range from developing business opportunities through to getting involved in community projects.

The winners received their awards at an event earlier this week which was also attended by their friends and families and representatives from organisations who sponsored the awards.

Winners are:

Adam Pavey, a first year marketing student, won the Business Link award to develop his idea for a recycled and recyclable pallet as a replacement to the existing wooden pallets that are currently widely used.
