“University’s New Campus Critical to Newport’s Development” says First Minister

Speaking at a dinner held by the Gwent branch of the Institute of Welsh Affairs (IWA), Mr Jones said, “The University is the Assembly’s partner in so much of the regeneration taking place in Gwent. In particular, the new City Centre Campus is critical to the development of Newport, and the Learning Campus is a crucial part of the regeneration of the former steelworks at Ebbw Vale.”

Previously Director of Research, Business and Innovation at the University of the West of England, Professor Hagen has conducted and published a number of studies of European companies’ foreign language usage and needs.

Commenting on his appointment, Professor Hagen said, “I am delighted to be joining Newport’s University at this exciting time in its long and illustrious history. The University is currently carrying out a series of very ambitious expansion plans, in particular, the new £35million City Campus which I believe will regenerate Newport’s city centre.

Sharon Dixon’s outstanding performance in the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) exam placed her first in Wales and 32nd in the world. Her achievement won her the £1000 ACCA Sir Julian Hodge bank award prize.

The surge in popularity of websites such as Facebook and MySpace has played a major part in emphasising the importance of online security, according to Dr Stilianos Vidalis, Senior Lecturer in Computing and Information Security, at Newport Business School.

He said, "Businesses, as well as the growing number of people who use these social networking sites, have to consider the consequences of online security. Employees are using them to divulge large amounts of information, and there are also issues about the effects on productivity and cyber bullying.

University's Building Work Respects Rare Local Ecology

Now, the team of contractors are preparing to leave the site for four months in respect of an embargo on building work because of the breeding season of the endangered fish species Shad. This temporary lull in construction has been built into the schedule of the new campus, which is due to open in 2010.

International Conference a First for Newport Business School

It was the first time the international conference, regarded as a crucial forum for presenting research, networking, and sharing good practice, has been held in Wales and the event attracted delegates from all over the world, including Scandinavia and the USA.

The delegates enjoyed a true taste of Wales, with a packed programme of social events including a Welsh-themed lunch with delicacies such as bara brith and home-baked Welsh cakes, and a tour of the Celtic Manor Resort, the venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup.

New Deans and Directors

Professor Chris Prince, formerly of Nottingham Trent University, is the new Head of Derbyshire Business School at the University of Derby.

Dr. Timothy McIntyre-Bhatty Acting Head of the Business School at the University of East London is to be the new Dean of Newport Business School (he will start in his new post in July).

Robert Bell, is the new interim Head of Business School at the University of East London.
