The London 2012 Games are and will be creating jobs and business opportunities and are benefiting culture, sport and regeneration in the capital and throughout the UK as a whole.Minister for the Olympics the Rt Hon Tessa Jowell MP sets the scene:
“In 2012 the spotlight of the world will be on the UK as we host the biggest ever Olympic Games.
The Olympics is about so much more than a few weeks of spectacular sport and I know that UK business schools have been working hard behind the scenes to get the most from this unique opportunity. I have seen great examples
of the work already taking place including:
• Education through specialist courses in areas such as project and risk management, tourism
management and sports management.
• Opportunities through strong links with the Olympic Delivery Authority, to provide
internships and research projects for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
• Tackling the important issues through conferences and events on sustaining business growth, managing cultural diversity
and volunteers.
London 2012 is our chance to drive sustainable outcomes throughout the UK economy.Delivering the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games is the biggest ever peace time operation, and will require the procurement of goods, works and services on a scale that is hard to comprehend.
London 2012 expects to have around 7,000 direct contracts which, together with its suppliers, will form supply chains of
around 75,000 opportunities. Business schools will play a huge part in research, education and the management of the
programme. I look forward to hearing more over the next four years and working with colleagues to drive forward every
opportunity the Games bring.”
